He was accused of re-writing history for the sake of his own theoretical arguments.
His book 'A People's History of the United States' was called the 'Hate America Book' by some critics.
He drew fire for comparing the Holocaust to death squad murders in Central America.
He was an outspoken critic of the Vietnam War.
He supported Mumia Abu-Jamal.
He said: 'Castro's Cuba had no bloody record of suppression.'
After his book was mentioned in the movie 'Good Will Hunting,' he dedicated a paragraph in the revised 'People's History' to Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

He flew bombing missions for the United States during World War II.
He became an anti-war advocate due to his experiences in World War II.
He was an active member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee during the Civil Rights Movement.
He said: 'History can be a powerful force for social change.'
He said: 'Whoever controls the past controls the future.'
He looked at history from a different point of view than is written in most text books.
