    Co-founder of the American Indian Movement (AIM, 1968)
    Led AIM in occupying the headquarters of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (1972) and Wounded Knee (1973)
    Appeared in the movies 'War Party' (1988), 'Last of the Mohicans' (1992), 'Thunderheart' (1992) and 'Older Than America' (2008)
    Recorded the album 'Let Mother Earth Speak' with New Age musician Kitaro (2012)
    He said that in his mid-20's, 'I wasted like six years doing absolutely nothing.... Being drunk, carrying on, wasting my life.'
    He spent two years in jail for stealing sixteen bags of food from a grocery store.
    He fathered 17 children with five wives.
    He was convicted of inciting a riot and assault after a demonstration in Custer, South Dakota (1975).
    He avoided serving time for a decade, fleeing first to California, where Governor Jerry Brown refused to extradite him, then to an Onandaga reservation in New York.
    When he was five, he was taken from his family and placed in a Bureau of Indian Affairs-run boarding school that tried to strip him of his Indian culture.
    After serving 14 months in prison on the Custer charges, he became an alcohol and drugs counselor at the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.
    He got the states of Indiana and Kentucky to pass strict laws against desecrating Native American graves.
    He organized 'Sacred Runs' to publicize the prevalence of diabetes among Indians.
    He said, 'What we did in the 1960s and 1970s was raise the consciousness of white America that this government has a responsibility to Indian people.'
