He underestimated Max Schmeling, and got knocked out.
He forced himself into boxing after his retirement, and lost to Ezzard Charles and Rocky Marciano.

Why he might not be annoying:

He has the record for holding the heavyweight title the longest (10 years, 25 successful defenses).
He is considered one of the top 5 pound-for-pound heavyweights of all time.
He was one of the first African-American heroes.
He avenged his loss against Max Schmeling, in a match where Schmeling was billed as 'the German Nazi' (which he wasn't; him and Louis were close friends) and Louis was billed as the American hero.
Louis knocked out Schmeling, sending him to the hospital for 6 months, a striking blow to Adolf Hitler.
He is virtually the perfect role model for anybody to look up to.
