Commentator
    (October 31, 1931- )
    Correspondent on '60 Minutes' (1975-81)
Anchor of 'CBS Evening News with Dan Rather (March 9, 1981-March 9, 2005)
Announced retirement from 'CBS Evening News' on March 9, 2005 (November 23, 2004)
He walked off the news set when the U.S. Tennis Open was threatening to delayed the newscast.
It ended on time, but Dan couldn't be found, so CBS showed a blank screen for more than 10 minutes until they got him back. He later apologized (September 11, 1987).
He was once interrupted by G.L.A.A.D. while doing a newscast.
While walking down a New York street, he was attacked by William Tager, yelling at him 'What's the Frequency Kenneth?' (1986).
(R.E.M. later wrote a song called 'What's The Frequency Kenneth?')
During the 2000 Presidential election, he used many weird analogies.
During the 1968 Democratic Convention, Rather was punched and beaten by conventioneers when asked them about the protest outside.
In another event during the '68 convention, he saw the Georgia delegation being forcefully thrown out by non-badge wearing people. When he asked what was going on, they threw him to the ground.
He survived rumors that Bryant Gumbel, Connie Chung, Paula Zahn and Diane Sawyer were replacing him.
He was rather gracious when Connie Chung became his co-anchor(1993).
His $3.5 million per year contract jumped to $7 million per year (1997).
He has a very calm demeanor when giving news and quickly reviews what he has said.
Under Houston Police supervision, he once had heroin injected into him, so he could do a story on its effects (some of the perks of being a news anchor).
Donated money to Sam Houston State University for their Journalism Building, which they named after him.
