Why he might be annoying
He married his wife on the rebound.
He didn’t love his wife (even though she loved him).
His wife Edith wanted to leave Europe; Otto refused to do so; you know the rest.
He underestimated how far the Nazis would go.
He favored his daughter Anne over his other daughter Margot.
In retrospect, his relationship with Anne was rather inappropriate at times.
He withheld the racier parts of Anne’s diary from being published.
Why he might not be annoying
He was a veteran of World War I (although for the other side).
He risked his life to hide his family and friends.
He was the sole survivor of the ‘Secret Annex’ during WW II.
He was devastated when he learned that his family was killed.
He raised funds to save the building where he hid his family; it is now a museum and one of Amsterdam’s most famous landmarks.
He worked until his death at 91 to keep his daughter’s memory alive.
