Why his hiccuping started and why it stopped were both mysteries.
The constant hiccuping caused frequent vomiting.
He was unable to keep his false teeth in.

Despite the hiccups, he led a fairly normal life, including marrying twice and fathering eight children.
He tried over 5,000 suggested cures without success.
He enjoyed less than one hiccup-free year before dying.
