He didn't release his first LP until he was in his mid-thirties.
He joined the German military music school during WWII to avoid military service.
German jazz?

He recorded hip hop. German rap?
He was practically unknown in America.

Why he might not be annoying:

His song 'The Games People Play' has been recorded by over 100 artists including Ray Coniff and Connie Francis.
He sold millions and millions and millions of records!
He never won a Grammy, but did manage to win a Country Music Award for 'When the Snow is on the Rose.'
He played and recorded a wide variety of music, including U2 and Bob Dylan.
Personally, he was the absolutely the perfect urbane, courtly European gentleman.
His only rule for what he did or did not record/play was whether he liked a piece.
At one time, he had four different LPs at #1 in four different categories in England.
On tour, he brought up to forty musicians (from up to 17 different countries) and an equal number of technicians with him, providing spectacular shows for his fans.
