The Resume

    (November 30, 1953- )
    Born in Los Angeles, California
    Son of Johnny Otis
    Born John Alexander Veilotes Jr.
Solo releases include ‘Here Comes Shuggie Otis (1969),’ ‘Freedom Flight (1971)’ and ‘Inspiration Information (1974)’
Wrote ‘Strawberry Letter 23’ (the Brothers Johnson, 1977)

Why he might be annoying:

His nickname is slang for ‘sugar.’
A Greek soul musician. (Well, at least we know <25081>how he got it Billy Preston called him to replace Mick Taylor in the Stones; he turned it down.
Though he signed up for composing lessons at the behest of the elder Otis, he was promptly dismissed by his tutor (‘he already knows this shit!’).
‘Aht Uh Mi Hed.’ Yes, that really was the name of one of his singles (think In-a-Gadda-da-Vida).
While fellow musicians raved about him, he was too far ahead of his time for the rock market.
Also not helped by first-run sales for ‘Inspiration Information,’ he was unable to handle the political side of the record label business and kept out of the spotlight for some 25 years.

Why he might not be annoying:

At age 15, he was already being compared to Jimi Hendrix and B.B. King.
In later years, he was compared to Stevie Wonder, George Benson, Sly Stone, and even Sir Elton – just to name a few – all at the same time.
Prince regarded him as an inspiration.
His works have been sampled by Outkast and – not making this up – Beyonce.
Name any instrument for his genre – including the vibraphone – and he usually had no trouble playing (he even did all the instruments for ‘Inspiration Information’ — at only 19).
Such was his legacy that, even with a greatly diminished voice and hopelessly disorganized live group session in 2012, he could still hold on to a crowd.
Both of his sons have followed in his footsteps.
