    King of Naples and Sicily (1734-59)

    Considered one of the ‘enlightened despots’ of the 18th century
    In addition to being Charles III of Spain, he was Charles I of Parma, Charles V of Sicily, and Charles VII of Naples.
    He had a bulging nose (the hereditary ‘Bourbon nose’).
    He introduced the Inquisition to Naples.
    An attempt to force the Spanish population to adopt French styles of dress resulted in riots, during which he fled Madrid for the royal estate at Aranjuez.
    He was the first ruler of Naples to live there after two centuries of viceroys.
    As King of Naples, he encouraged the excavation of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
    One of his first actions as King of Spain was ordering the people of Madrid to stop emptying chamber pots out of their windows.
    He eliminated many antiquated laws that restricted trade an manufacturing.
    He supported the American revolutionaries during the War of Independence.
