Vocalists

The Resume

    (1966-1987)
    Easy listening vocal group
Assembled by music director George Wilkins and choreographer Ward Ellis
Regular performers on the TV series ‘Our Place’ (1967) and ‘Make Your Own Kind of Music’ (1971)
Recorded the albums ‘Here Come the Doodletown Pipers’ (1966), ‘Singalong ‘67’ (1967), and ‘Love Themes: Hit Songs for Those in Love’ (1968)

Why they might be annoying:

They made the Carpenters sound edgy.
They were originally a thirty-member group before they pared down to twenty.
When they were guests on Roger Miller’s variety show, he would dub them ‘the Poodletown Diapers.’
Their popularity dropped off after they reorganized and dubbed themselves the New Doodletown Pipers (1971).

Why they might not be annoying:

AllMusic argued, ‘What's crazy is that when you really think about it, the Pipers are weirdly in sync with the spirit of the counterculture revolution, presenting a utopian ideal where the young generation -- men, women, white and black -- comes together in the name of harmony, vocal and otherwise.’
Member Teresa Graves went on to join Laugh-In and star in ‘Get Christie Love.’
They made one of their last appearances on ‘Dave Letterman’s Old-Fashioned Christmas’ episode of Late Night.
They got mentioned on The Simpsons when Homer worries that he and Marge don’t have anything in common: ‘Look at these records: Jim Nabors, Glen Campbell, the Doodletown Pipers. Now look at her records! They stink!’
