    During his 1950 Senate campaign, he played on the ignorance of rural Southern voters by accusing Claude Pepper, his opponent in the primaries, of being a 'shameless extrovert' and 'practicing celibacy before his marriage.'
    He also accused him of having a sister who was once a thespian, and that his brother was a Homo Sapien.
    He signed the Southern Manifesto.
    He was a member of the 'Southern bloc,' opposing most civil rights bills and desegregation.
    He was John F. Kennedy's primary ally in the south, but then he betrayed Kennedy and ran for President in the primaries.
    He served in World War II.
    He voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1957.
    With Senator Spessard Holland, he co-sponsored the 24th Amendment, which banned poll taxes.
    He was a moderate Democrat.
