    At age 2, she had an atrial septal defect (ASD, or hole in the heart); without surgery, she would not have been expected to live beyond age 5.
    At age 17, she suffered kidney infections, retching, urinating blood, and ultimately a cyst.
    Driving home from the 2003 CMA Awards, her Chrysler Sebring was demolished by a Cadillac. She was left completely paralyzed for several weeks.
    She was born to a schoolteacher and state environmentalist in a town with barely 900 people.
    She co-authored every track on Right Road Now (a rarity for any CD in her genre).
    While she was not yet successful in her own right, her material had been recorded by LeAnn Rimes and Lee Ann Womack.
    To commemorate the scar on the left side of her rib cage, she had ‘Disce pati’ (‘learn to suffer’) tattooed in script where the scar occurred.
