His original invention of basketball required a soccer ball and two peach baskets (for hoops).

At nine years old, he became an orphan.
His game has become one of the most popular indoor sports internationally.
He creatively developed an indoor sport so that his students would have something to do in the winter.
Aside from being a teacher, he was a doctor of medicine and an ordained minister.
He watched basketball become an Olympic sport during the Olympics in Germany (1936).
