His troops enforced martial law in Germany during Hitler's seizure of power.
He did not understand Heinz Guderian's blitzkrieg-style tactics.

He disliked Hitler and Nazi politics and fought only out of loyalty to his country.
He participated in the invasions of the Soviet Union and France.
Unlike most German leaders, he was not accused or convicted of war crimes.
His interviews with British historians in prison contributed to modern understanding of the war.
He suffered two heart attacks but died of old age.
