The Resume

    (June 25, 1894-December 28, 1989)
Born in Nagyszeben, Austria-Hungary (now Sibiu, Romania)
    Physicist and engineer
    Pioneer of rocketry
    Launched a liquid-fuel rocket near Berlin (May 7, 1931)
Wrote 'Ways to Spaceflight' (1929) and 'Men in Space' (1953)

Why he might be annoying:

He was obsessed with Jules Verne, re-reading his books until he memorized them.
The doctoral dissertation he wrote on rocket science was rejected by the University of Heidelberg as 'utopian.'
He built V-2 rockets for Nazi Germany.
He said, 'It is my thesis that flying saucers are real, and that they are space ships from another solar system. I think that they possibly are manned by intelligent observers who are members of a race that may have been investigating our earth for centuries.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He decided not to rewrite and resubmit his dissertation, commenting, 'I will prove that I am able to become a greater scientist than some of you, even without the title of Doctor.'
He was the scientific consultant for Fritz Lang's 'Frau Im Mond' ('The Woman in the Moon'), the first film with scenes set in outer space (1929).
He developed the idea of using multi-stage rockets.
He was invited to the United States to witness the launch of the Saturn V rocket that carried the Apollo 11 crew to the moon.
Oberth-class starships were mentioned in several episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
