Filmmaker
    (June 5, 1931-October 27, 1990)
    Born in Pontchateau, France
Directed 'Lola' (1961), 'The Bay of Angels' (1963), 'The Umbrellas of Cherbourg' (1964), 'The Young Girls of Rochefort' (1967), 'Model Shop' (1969), 'The Donkey Skin' (1970), 'The Pied Piper' (1972), 'The Slightly Pregnant Man' (1973), 'Lady Oscar' (1979), 'A Room in Town' (1982) and 'Parking' (1982)
Jury member at the Cannes Film Festival (1977)
Married to fellow director Agnes Varda (1962-90)
Other French directors accused him of selling out when he went to Hollywood to film 'Model Shop.'
He was somewhat of a control freak and abhorred actors improvising.
The cause of his death was initially reported as leukemia; nearly 20 years later, Varda revealed that he had actually died from AIDS.
His father initially insisted that he go to trade school and become a mechanic until he made an animated short film in the attic that convinced his father of his talent.
Eric Rohmer called 'Lola' 'the most original film of the New Wave.'
'The Umbrellas of Cherbourg' won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and earned three Oscar nominations for him and composer Michel Legrand: Best Song, Best Original Score and Best Original Screenplay.
He was described by one critic as 'perhaps the only non-American to lens quality musicals.'
