He campaigned for his political mentor, Union City Mayor William Musto, then testified against him in a racketeering trial.
He is an advocate for affirmative action and gun control.
Two Republican state legislators filed an ethics complaint alleging that he broke conflict of interest rules when he rented property to a non-profit group that receives federal funding.
He has directed consulting and lobbying work to Kay LiCausi, a former aide he was rumored to have a romantic relationship with.
He was reportedly so bitter about Clinton's loss to Obama that he rejected an offer to deliver a prime-time speech at the Democratic convention.

His predecessor in the House said, 'He came from nothing and he's accomplished what he's accomplished because he's been willing to get down into the arena and fight.'
He voted against the war in Iraq.
He has been a long-time supporter of democracy in Cuba.
