Recorded the singles 'A Week in a Country Jail' (1970), 'The Year That Clayton Delaney Died' (1971), 'Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine' (1972), 'I Love' (1973), 'Country Is' (1974), 'I Care' (1974) and 'Faster Horses (The Cowboy and the Poet)' (1975)
Hosted the syndicated TV show 'Pop! Goes the Country' (1980)
Wrote 'The Songwriter's Handbook' (1976) and 'How I Write Songs, Why You Can' (1976)
Inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame (2008)

Why he might be annoying:

'I Love' was the only one his singles to become a pop success.
'I Love' was adapted into a Coors Light commercial.
He also appeared in ads for Tyson chicken.
He ran unsuccessfully for governor of Tennessee (1982).

Why he might not be annoying:

At 15, he had to drop out of school and support the family after his father was shot in a hunting accident that kept him from working.
He was nicknamed 'the Storyteller' and 'the Mark Twain of Country Music.'
He wrote Jeannie C. Riley's 'Harper Valley PTA,' which topped the pop and country charts and sold six million singles.
He and his wife run a no-kill animal shelter.
