Accused of killing US soldier Sgt. Christopher Speer with a grenade
Imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay detention camp (since October 2002)
Trial set for October 2008
Why he might be annoying
He is often referred to as a ‘child soldier,’ although he was in his teens when captured.
He spied for and acted as a translator for Al-Qaeda.
He was caught on video planting landmines and joking with the cameraman.
He allegedly told interrogators he wanted to ‘kill a lot of Americans to get lots of money.’
His family was close friends with Osama Bin Laden.
His late father was a senior associate and possible financier of Al-Qaeda.
Why he might not be annoying
He is the only underage soldier to be charged with war crimes in recent history.
He is the last Westerner still held at Guantanamo.
Amnesty International and UNICEF have spoken against his detainment.
From childhood he was encouraged by his father to become a suicide bomber.
He claims he was physically and emotionally abused by his interrogators.
Canada has made little effort to have him extradited or repatriated.
