Politician
    (June 22, 1974-June 16, 2016)
Born in Batley, England, United Kingdom
Birth name was Helen Joanne Leadbeater
    British Labour Party politician
Represented the Batley and Spen constituency, in Parliament (elected in May 2015)
Worked for aid groups with Oxfam International in Belgium, the US, and the UK (2001-09)
Shot and stabbed multiple times, in Birstall, West Yorkshire, by constituent Thomas Mair (June 16, 2016)
Her MP campaign was supported by George Clooney and Daniel Craig.
Her death was almost immediately politicized as a means of attacking pro-Brexit advocates (she had vocally supported staying in the European Union, and her death occurred a mere week before the Referendum vote).
Initially, it was widely reported that Mair had shouted 'Britain First' before attacking her (thereby connecting it to the Brexit Referendum), but eyewitnesses denied ever having heard him yell such a thing.
She was the first sitting British MP murdered since the death of Conservative MP Ian Gow, who was killed in a Provisional Irish Republican Army terrorist attack, in 1990.
She campaigned actively on issues relating to the Syrian Civil War.
She received the Young Global Leader award at the Davos World Economic Forum (2009).
She was a winner of the DEVEX 40 under 40 International Development Leaders Award (2012).
She worked as a political assistant to Labour MP Joan Walley, as well as Gordon Brown's wife.
She was murdered en route to a constituency hearing.
A GoFundMe page raising money in aid of three charities 'closest to her heart' amassed $1 million dollars within 24 hours.
Her husband, Brendan Cox, released a statement after her death reading: 'Hate doesn't have a creed, race or religion, it is poisonous. Jo would have no regrets about her life, she lived every day of it to the full.'
Nigel Farage was hotly criticized after the Brexit Referendum for claiming that the UK left the EU 'without a single bullet being fired,' apparently forgetting her being shot only a week prior.
Thomas Mair was found guilty of all charges related to her murder and was sentenced to a whole-life tariff without possibility of parole (November 23, 2016).
