Entrepreneur

The Resume

    (1943- )
    Born in Amritsar, India
    Founder of Insys Therapeutics (1990)
    Net worth: $1.8 billion (2018)
Convicted on racketeering and conspiracy charges (May 2, 2019)

Why he might be annoying:

Insys paid over $2 million in bribes to get physicians to prescribe Subsys, a spray made with the opioid fentanyl and approved by the FDA for terminal cancer patients, to people with non-life threatening chronic pain.
The bribes were disguised as speakers fees for ‘educational seminars’ that were actually social gatherings at expensive NYC restaurants, often followed by company sales reps taking doctors to strip clubs and bars.
Female sales reps were encouraged to ‘behave more sexually’ towards physicians to encourage them to prescribe the drug.
The company also had employees pose as doctors to give fake diagnoses to insurance companies to get approval for payments for Subsys.
His company spent over $500,000 opposing ballot initiatives that would legalize medical marijuana.
Over 900 people have died from using Subsys.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was the first member of his family to go to college.
He was motivated to create Subsys after watching his wife struggle with severe pain while suffering from breast cancer.
He founded a charity in his and his late wife’s names to fund cancer research.
