Her heroes, a time traveling 20th century nurse married to a man in the 18th century in the Outlander novels and a 19th century occult-related crime solving English nobleman in Lord John stories, are very original concepts.
She does an incredible amount of research for her books; she owns three Gaelic dictionaries and twenty books on herbal medicines, including one from 1647, and has up to two hundred books checked out from various libraries at any one time.
She makes sure her books are co-released in audiobook form for visually impaired fans.
Due to the scifi elements in her books, she has many readers outside the usual historical romance milieu.
