She is better known for her long-running love affair with newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst than her movie career.
Hearst was accused of trying to shove her 'down the public's throat.'
She smoked.
She had a stuttering problem, and therefore could not quite make the transition from silents to talkies.
She was an alcoholic.

Why she might not be annoying:

She was a gifted screwball comedienne who was unafraid to make herself look silly in exaggerated comic situations.
She started lots of charities and even a children's clinic that is still around today.
She originally wanted to be a school teacher.
She was not invited to William Randolph Hearst's funeral.
She is described as being a generous person and well liked by everyone who knew her.
