Composer
    (July 10, 1931- )
Born in New York City, New York
Wrote the music and lyrics for 'Milk and Honey' (1961), 'Hello Dolly' (1964), 'Mame' (1966), 'Dear World' (1969), 'Mack & Mabel' (1974), 'The Grand Tour' (1979) and 'La Cage aux Folles' (1983)
Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (1982)
Received a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theater (2009)
He never learned to read music.
He was sued for plagiarism; according to the suit, the first four bars of ‘Hello Dolly’ were identical to the refrain of a Mack David song called ‘Sunflower.’
He wrote the title song for ‘Barney’s Big Adventure.’
His musical approach has often been described as old-fashioned, especially when compared to contemporaries like Stephen Sondheim.
He claimed to have never even heard ‘Sunflower’ before the lawsuit, but was persuaded to agree to an out of court settlement to keep the case from delaying the adaptation of ‘Hello Dolly’ into a film.
In 1969, he became the first composer/lyricist with three shows running simultaneously on Broadway: ‘Hello Dolly,’ ‘Mame’ and ‘Dear World.’
Carol Channing said, ‘When they passed out talent, Jerry stood in line twice.’
Accepting the Tony for Best Score for ‘La Cage aux Folles,’ he said, ‘There’s been a rumor that the simple, hummable show tune is dead on Broadway. Well, it’s alive and well at the Palace.’
