He was removed from the case after writing anonymous letters to the San Francisco Chronicle praising his work (1978).

He served in the infantry during the Korean War.
He was married to Carol Bacigalupi for 60 years.
He said about the Zodiac case, ‘It still haunts me. It always will.’
Even after retiring, he would annually revisit the site where Zodiac killed taxicab driver Paul Stine hoping to find an overlooked piece of evidence that could solve the case.
He was an inspiration for two classic movie cops, Steve McQueen’s Frank Bullitt and Clint Eastwood’s ‘Dirty’ Harry Callahan.
