The Resume

    (January 25, 1919-August 13, 2010)
Born in New York City, New York
    Correspondent for NBC News (1952-84)
Wrote 'Strictly Speaking' (1974) and 'A Civil Tongue' (1975)
Moderated the Gerald Ford-Jimmy Carter presidential debate (1976)

Why he might be annoying:

He worked freqently as a substitute anchor: for Hugh Downs on The Today Show, for John Chancellor on the NBC Nightly News, even for SNL's Weekend Update on three occassions.
He anchored NBC's five-minute 'Newsbreak' segments during morning programming, which were cut down to one minute after 1976.
He had cameos as himself in the films 'Stripes,' 'Spies Like Us' and 'My Fellow Americans' and the series The Golden Girls and Newhart.
Even in the not very crowded field of commentators who double as language snobs, he was overshadowed by William Safire.

Why he might not be annoying:

He served with the US Navy in World War II.
He has been married to Rigel Grell for over 60 years.
He headed the usage panel for the American Heritage Dictionary.
He conducted the first interview with Japanese Emperor Hirohito (1975).
He retired as a newscaster for NBC by hosting Saturday Night Live and singing 'Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone' during the monologue.
