    U.S. Senator from Kentucky (1926-1949)
    Vice President of the United States under Harry Truman (1949-1953)
    He ran for the Democratic nomination for the presidency, but lost to Adlai Stevenson primarily because of his old age.
    He married a widow nearly half his age which Vice President.
    He loved to point out how he had been born in a log cabin in Kentucky.
    He was part of the big four which would regularly meet with President Roosevelt during World War II.
    He could shout a speech without the need for a microphone.
    He was one of the last old-time Vice Presidents who presided over the Senate regularly more legislative than executive.
    Richard Nixon refused to continue to use the nickname 'veep' out of respect for him.
