Musician
    (December 21, 1947-February 25, 2014)
    Born in Algeciras, Andalusia, Spain
Birth name was Francisco Gustavo Sanchez Gomes
    Flamenco guitarist
Considered a founder of 'nuevo flamenco,' which incorporated elements of jazz, salsa, rumba, bossa nova and other forms of music
Collaborated with jazz musicians John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell, Al di Meola and Chick Corea
Songs include 'Rio Ancho,' 'Mediterranean Sundance,' 'Entre Dos Aguas (Between Two Waters),' 'La Barrosa,' 'Impetu,' 'Cepa Andaluza' and 'Gloria al Nino Ricardo'
    Won two Latin Grammys
While initially touring with McLaughlin and Coryell, he suffered headaches and backaches while performing because of his difficulty in keeping up with the other guitarists while improvising.
He released a whopping 26-CD boxed set of his recordings.
He said, 'Sometimes I see the guitar and I see the devil, because when I hear myself I only see the blemish and the things that need to be improved.'
To American pop audiences, he is best known for playing guitar on Bryan Adams' hit 'Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman?'
His father forced him to practice twelve hours a day. (Although he denied a rumor that his father tied his legs to his bed to keep him from going out.)
He was known for his dexterity, hand strength and lightning-fast speed.
He was the first flamenco player to perform at Madrid's Teatro Real opera house (1975).
'Jazz Times' said of his influence, 'Most flamenco fans can trace the music's history to either Before Paco or After Paco.'
He said, 'I have always been careful that [my music] doesn't lose the essence and the roots and the tradition of what is flamenco. I have incorporated other things, but things that have not altered the philosophy of the music.'
