    He unsuccessfully campaigned for President of the New York City Council as Norman Mailer's running mate (1969).
    He was a pitchman for Piels Beer.
    In an article about illegal immigrants, he said that when they see a pretty girl on the subway 'they talk to each other in Mexican.'
    When fellow Newsday columnist Ji-Yeon Mary Yuh described one of his articles as sexist, he called her a 'slant-eyed cunt' and 'yellow cur,' adding 'The fucking bitch doesn't know her place.' (1990)
    He was suspended from the newspaper after calling Howard Stern's radio show to joke over the outburst and make additional jabs about Koreans.
    He was known for writing about how events affected the common man, most famously in a column about the JFK assassination focusing on the man who dug the president's grave.
    He suffered a concussion after being beaten by mobster Jimmy Burke (1970).
    After being beaten and robbed during the Crown Heights riots (August, 1991), he found a pay phone and filed his story.
    One of his daughters, Rosemary, died from a rare blood disease (2004) and another daughter, Kelly, died after suffering cardiac arhythmia (2009).
