Oddity

The Resume

    (August 5, 1862-April 11, 1890)
Birth name was Joseph Carey Merrick
    Diagnosed falsely with Neurofibromatosis
Diagnosed updated to Proteus Syndrome, 90 years after his death (1979)
Disease began to develop when he turned two
Dr. Frederick Treves rescued him from the circus (December 2, 1884)
Died at twenty seven when his head fell off his pillows while asleep, the head's massive weight caused suffocation

Why he might be annoying:

His name was Joseph, but he was called John by Dr. Treves.
Michael Jackson attempted to buy his remains.
His deformity made him a social outcast.
His sleeping position was a sitting position with his knees drawn into his chest and his head resting on his knees.
He often wished he could sleep like normal people, and it is thought that, although he knew it would kill him, he tried it and committed suicide.
Some of the fallacies in the movie was that he was kidnapped or beaten by side show owner Tom Noonan. Under Noonan's care he amassed £200 a tidy sum for that era. He was beaten and robbed a couple of times but not by Noonan.
His speech was much more intelligible than in the movie, Dr Treves acted as an interpreter.
He was never kidnapped from the hospital in London.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was tortured and forced to work as a circus freak.
Despite his freakishly monstrous appearance, he was quite gentle, intelligent and loving.
The 1980 movie 'The Elephant Man' received eight academy award nominations.
John Hurt portray the Elephant Man.
The movie is based on the more accurately titled book 'THE ELEPHANT MAN (A Study in Human Dignity).'
Howard Stern named Fred Schreiber, a regular guest to his show who has a speech defect 'Fred the Elephant Boy,' in Elephant Man's honor.
David Bowie performed the lead in the Broadway version of 'The Elephant Man.'
He was born into extreme poverty.
He was the rare person born into poverty during the late 1800s who learned how to read (he taught himself).
He was left handed (his right arm was useless).
He painted and built models, many from his imagination.
He continued to have a strong faith in God, and the kindness of humans.
