He graduated from the U.S Military Academy 5th of 45 students in his year.
He received the Medal of Honour when at the First Battle of Bull Run, he was wounded in the right thigh and refused to leave his guns.
He received a commendation for his conduct in battle at Malvern Hill.
Following the capture of his Division Commander at Gettysburg, he led his Division to safe ground at Cemetary Ridge and repelled an attack by Jubal Early's troops.
While Governor of Mississippi, he took several steps to advance the rights of freed slaves and appointed the first black office-holders in state history.
