As a radio talk show host, he was described as 'Rush Limbaugh on decaf.'
His immigration reform plan was attacked by conservatives such as Pat Buchanan and Tom Tancredo as 'stealth amnesty.'
He described his visit to a Baghdad marketplace, accompanied by 100 soldiers in armored Humvees with attack helicopters providing security from the air, as 'like a normal outdoor market in Indiana in the summer' (April 2, 2007).
The day after his visit, 21 market workers were abducted and killed.
Why he might not be annoying
He co-sponsored legislation to reform pork barrel spending.
He supports the right to bear arms.
Running for House Minority leader, he said, 'The American people didn't quit the Contract with America, we did.'
