    Born in Blantyre, Scotland, United Kingdom
    Sent to Africa by the London Missionary Society
    First European to see Victoria Falls and Lake Malawi

Why he might be annoying:

    He wanted to be a missionary in China, but was prevented by the Opium Wars.
    Despite protests from her parents, he brought his pregnant wife along with him during his early explorations.
    Although he denounced slavery in his writings, he accepted help from slave traders during his explorations.

Why he might not be annoying:

    After working 10 hour days in a cotton-spinning factory, he would attend night classes for two hours.
    His arm was partially disabled when he was mauled by a lion (1844).
    His exploration of the Zambezi River (1858-64) contributed large collections of botanic, geographic and ecological material to scientific institutions in Britain.
    His letters stirred up support for the suppression of the slave trade.
