She disliked the pressure of competitive sports so she took up surfing.
She retired from surfing at 18 but returned at 22.
She boasted: 'There are 10 really famous male surfers in the world and one really famous female surfer. That's me.'
Why she might not be annoying
Despite being only eleven and the youngest to compete in a San Diego surfing event, she won it.
At twelve she won a world championship, she was the only female competitor.
She won three world championships and well over 100 first places by age 18.
She was selected #99 by Sports Illustrated for Women's Century's Greatest Sportswomen.
