    He wore thick glasses when he played.
    His coaching style has been compared to that of a stern father figure.
    He retired from coaching the Islanders in 1986 only to return two seasons later.
    He retired again in 1994 after his Islanders were embarrassed in the playoffs by their cross town rivals, the New York Rangers.
    His handpicked successor, Lorne Henning, was fired after one season.
    He helped turn the Islanders from a laughable expansion team into Stanley Cup champions in seven years.
    He led the Islanders to the playoffs in his second season as coach. They became the second team in NHL history to overcome a 3 games to 0 deficit to win a playoff series.
    He won a record 19 consecutive playoff series (1980-84)
    The Islanders raised a banner in honor of his 739 regular season coaching wins with the team.
