Why he might be annoying
He graduated Notre Dame but did not play football there.
Former coach, Tyrone Willingham, was shown the door after three productive seasons, but in the first year of a six-year contract, he received a 10-year contract extension.
His BA degree is in speech and drama.
Despite being a graduate of Notre Dame, he was not at the top of the Irish wish list. Notre Dame coveted Urban Meyer (a former Irish assistant) and Jon Gruden (who has no Notre Dame ties but is Catholic) first.
Why he might not be annoying
He doesn't make excuses when his team loses.
There was some questionable officiating at the end of the 2005 USC game that likely cost the Irish the win, and he did not complain.
As a Notre Dame alumnus, he not only understands the demands and expectations in South Bend, he welcomes them as a challenge.
He has 4 Super Bowl rings as a coordinator or assistant coach.
He coached Notre Dame into a BCS Bowl in his first season.
He worked his way up through the ranks, starting as a high school coach.
He has been credited by many for his role in developing Tom Brady.
He agreed to let a dying boy call the first play against Washington. The boy died the day before the game, and despite starting from the one-yard line, honored the boy's request to pass. It was completed for a 13-yard gain.
His daughter Hannah is autistic.
His foundation, Hannah & Friends is dedicated to providing a better quality of life for children and young adults affected by autism and global delays.
