Why he might be annoying
He added 'Jones' to his name just for the heck of it.
His ship, the Bon Homme Richard, sank the day after he captured the HMS Serapis.
He was almost a pirate because he attacked commercial vessels.
He died and was buried in France; the revolutionary government sold the property and forgot about it, and Jones' coffin was only returned to the US in 1913.
Teddy Roosevelt sent four cruisers to France to retrieve his body; these were also met by seven battleships during their travel up the Chesapeake Bay (talk about burning taxpayer money).
Whiel in the Russian navy, he was accused of statutory rape of an eleven year old girl.
He was a slave trader.
Why he might not be annoying
He handed Britain one of their major naval defeats during the Revolutionary War.
When asked to surrender by the captain of the Serapis, he said: 'I have not yet begun to fight.'
There is a Marine guard at his place of burial in the US Naval Academy Chapel.
He made several daring raids on British shores during the Revolutionary War.
Benjamin Franklin was his patron.
