Why he might be annoying
He supported the New Deal, until one of its programs competed with his utility corporation.
He changed from an outspoken Democrat to a Republican (1939).
His presidential campaign was the first time he had run for public office.
Although himself a supporter of a peacetime draft, he accused FDR of warmongering (1940).
In his presidential run, he lost to FDR by over 360 electoral votes (1940).
Why he might not be annoying
He fought in World War I.
He considered it crucial for the American South to stop its racist policies toward blacks.
He was a critic of America's isolationist policies during the early part of World War II.
He died unexpectedly from a series of heart attacks (1944).
At his funeral, Eleanor Roosevelt called him a 'man of courage.'
