Crime Fighter
    (April 25, 1870-July 8, 1905)
    Born in Chicago, Illinois
Deputy sherrif for Monroe County, Florida
One of the first game wardens in the US
Patrolled Florida's west coast, from the Everglades to Key West
Fatally shot while trying to arrest Walter Smith for poaching
Before becoming a game warden, he often served as a guide for hunters who killed birds for their plumage.
Two of his brothers-in-law took their revenge by burning down Smith's house.
His grave and monument were washed away during Hurricane Donna (1960).
At the time of his appointment as game warden, he was described as 'clean-cut, reliable, courageous, energetic and conscientious.'
Under his protection, bird populations in the Everglades started to rebound.
Smith claimed self-defense, testifying that Bradley had fired first but missed.
The jury bought it and let Smith off, despite evidence that Bradley's gun had not been fired.
His death prompted strengthened environmental laws to ban the trade in plume feathers.
