    (February 15, 1939-August 21, 2014)
    Born in Estherville, Iowa
Abducted, raped and murdered between 17 and 21 women in and around Anchorage, Alaska (1971-83)
    Pleaded guilty to four murders
Sentenced to life in prison plus 461 years
He served 20 months for burning down a school bus garage (1960-62).
A court appointed psychologist assessed him as an 'infantile personality.'
He served a year for stealing a chainsaw and was diagnosed as bipolar (1977).
In addition to the women he killed, he raped more than 30 other women.
He would fly victims to a remote cabin, strip them naked, set them free in the woods, give them a brief head start, then hunt them with a rifle or knife.
He was caught after a would-be victim escaped from his car and flagged down a passing truck.
When confronted by police, he said, 'You can't rape a prostitute, can you?'
Police searching his house found a hidden cache in the attic rafters containing jewelry and ID cards from his victims and a hunting rifle that matched the bullets found at four crime scenes.
Growing up, he was bullied because he stuttered and had sever acne.
He was a natural lefty who was forced by his parents to use his right hand.
As part of his plea bargain, he helped the authorities locate the graves of a dozen victims.
