Judge

The Resume

    (1921- )
    Born in Witchita, Kansas
Federal judge notorious for opposing jail sentences for child pornographers
Federal judge for the Eastern District of New York (1967- )
BA from Brooklyn College and law degree from Columbia

Why he might be annoying:

He is opposed to the mandatory minimum five year sentence for child pornographers (which most people would find rather lenient) and twice has actually set aside the conviction of a man convicted in his court in order to avoid sentencing him to the five year minimum.
A decision of his involving a suit against gun manufacturers was overturned by the US Supreme Court. He was asked to remove himself from another case involving a lawsuit against gun manufacturers because of his obvious bias.
He claims that users of child pornography don't actually victimize the children as do the producers. Ignoring the salient fact that their would be no child pornography industry if there were no customers.
With no formal training in psychology and going against all common sense and scientific evidence, he claims that viewing child pornography does not lead to child molestation.
In general, he is against harsh sentencing of even the most egregious law breakers.
He is basically the poster child for liberal judges run amok that infuriate the every day citizens that have to live with the criminals he sets free.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was an advisory attorney for the plaintiffs in Brown vs The Board of Education.
He served in the US Navy during WWII.
US judges can just stop working and draw full pay without having to hear cases. He has technically done so but still carries a full caseload.
He is known for an informal courtroom style, sometimes sitting at a table with the opposing lawyers in a business suit versus sitting in the judge's chair in robes.
In addition to his duties as a judge, he taught at Columbia Law School from 1952-1998 and (as of 2010) taught at Brooklyn College Law School.
He is against jail sentences for first time non-violent drug offenders, preferring treatment.
He has a very nice smile.
