At the age of four, an accident left him blind in one eye.
He started playing guitar at three.

The same year he became a session musician, he played on Captain Beefheart's first album.
He is self-taught.
Cooder's trademark slide guitar work graced the recordings of such artists as Captain Beefheart, Randy Newman, Little Feat, Van Dyke Parks, the Rolling Stones, Taj Mahal, and Gordon Lightfoot
He inspired Duane Allman to learn how to play slide guitar.
He won the 1994 Grammy for Best World Music Recording.
He experimented with jazz, gospel, world and country music.
He is currently a successful solo artist and frontman for the 'Buena Vista Social Club.'
