    Named in 1282 during the French invasion of Sicily after the saying, 'Morte Alla Francia Italia Anela' (Death to the French is Italy's Cry)' or 'MAFIA'
    Then, eventually the word 'mafia' came to mean 'manly,' in Sicily
    Formed by rich Sicilian land owners in the late middle ages
    Consisting of primarily Sicilian members
    The Mafia grew into a vast criminal organization, with there fingers in every industry from politics to construction
    They are strongly organized in America since 1893
    Famous members included Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, Philip 'Rusty' Rastelli and John Gotti

Why Mafia might be annoying:

    They have been stereotyped through films and portrayals by actors such as Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino.
    They inspired Marlon Brandos' portrayal of The Godfather.
    They often murder people and refer to this as a 'whack' or a 'hit.'
    They are criminals.
    They employ thousands of thugs, gunmen and thieves.
    They corrupt many people in authority with bribes and threats.
    They fear no one.
    They are key figures in gambling, drugs and prostitution.
    They took advantage of prohibition in the 1920's.
    They tried to make money from the tragedies of September 11, 2001, by getting rubble removal contracts from the government.
    They have many members called Pauly, Jimmy and Tony.
    They have irritating sayings, such as 'Forget about it.'
    They are often referred to as 'the mob,' 'wise guys' and 'good fellas.'
    They live by inspiring fear.
    Many of its members' lives come to a bloody end.
    They often have nicknames, such as Salvatore 'Sammy The Bull' Gravano, Frankie 'Lefty' Rosenthal and Jimmy 'The Gent' Burke.
    They showed people that 'Crime Can Pay.'

Why Mafia might not be annoying:

    They live by a code of honor which involves no ratting out, obedience to the boss, to assist your allies, avenge your friends & avoid authority.
    They inspired many great films.
    Their casinos bring people to Las Vegas.
    They made alcohol available to the common man during prohibition.
    To become a member you must pass set rules and prove yourself.
    They dress neatly and are polite (when needed).
    They are one of the highest earning organizations in the world.
    They were allegedly involved with Frank Sinatra, JFK, Dean Martin and many other celebrities.
