Why he might be annoying
When ‘Howling Wind’ was released, the album was hard to find (1976).
His song lyrics are very bitter and angry.
He had a life-long bitterness towards rock critics and record labels.
The half-baked album ‘The Parkerilla’ was released so that he could complete his contract with Mercury Records.
In 1988, after disappointing sales, he decided to write short stories and quit touring.
Since the 90’s, he records for independent record labels.
Why he might not be annoying
He worked as a gas station attendant before he became a musician.
His angry British rocker angle preceded Elvis Costello’s by two to three years.
His lyrics are class-conscious and he sings passionately.
He along with with Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, Nick Lowe, and Dave Edmunds, pioneered pub-rock's (bar band) British New Wave movement.
His song ‘Mercury Poisoning’ is about the shoddy treatment that he got from Mercury Records.
One of his songs ‘You Can’t Be Too Strong’ confronts abortion.
In the late 80’s, he recorded some acoustic guitar albums showing his indebtedness towards his Bob Dylan influence.
Presently, he now works comfortably for independent labels, plays solo gigs, and chats with fans backstage and online.
