Why he might be annoying:

His motto is: 'do politics before it does you.'
Thomas Friedman Institute called him 'an intense, 6-foot-3 hybrid of charter school advocate and union-loving Teamster.'
He worked on Gary Hart's, Mondale's and Michael Dukakis' presidential campaigns.
He came up with the idea to shoot a censorship PSA featuring Donny Osmond in a Nazi uniform.
He unceremoniously resigned from Green Dot's Board of Directors in a tersely worded statement without any further explanation.
He lost his bid to oust incumbent LA Mayor Eric Garcetti, who won by an overwhelming majority (2016).

Why he might not be annoying:

He was raised by a single mom but spent a year in foster care.
He was motivated to focus on education after losing his younger brother to drug addiction.
He organized events for the 1984 Summer Olympics Torch Relay directly out of college.
He mobilized the youth demographic in unprecedented numbers through Rock the Vote.
He had inventive ideas to attract young voters (comedic PSAs, setting up registration tables at Lollapalooza, etc.)
His organization was operating 20 charter schools in the first decade of its founding.
His program's mostly Hispanic students consistently outperformed their counterparts at traditional district schools.
His success with Green Dot Charter Schools – and in particular with Locke High – had Obama Education Secretary Arne Duncan meeting with him to discuss its implementation nationally.
