Won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction (1966)

Why she might be annoying:

Embarrassed about growing up poor, she invented a childhood with servants and private schools.
She was married and divorced four times.
Her fourth husband, who was 20 years her junior, divorced her when she revealed her true age after the wedding.
She became irrationally angry at biographers who unearthed the truth about her past, such as her original name.
She said, 'Everybody except the Jews knows the Jews are not chosen but are a lot of noisy, arrogant, stupid, pretentious people.'

Why she might not be annoying:

When she was two, her mother died in childbirth.
Her first husband beat her into unconsciousness with a hairbrush.
She nearly died in the Spanish flu epidemic (1918), which left her hair prematurely white.
Despite her own opinions about Jews, she produced devastating portraits of anti-Semites.
Graham Greene said her short stories were the best since early Hemingway.
