Actor
    (August 13, 1904-April 21, 1999)
    Born in Olathe, Kansas
Appeared in the films 'Wings' (1927), 'Abie's Irish Rose' (1928), 'Close Harmony' (1929), 'Paramount on Parade' (1930), 'Safety in Numbers' (1930), 'The Road to Reno' (1931), 'This Reckless Age' (1932), 'Old Man Rhythm' (1935), 'Let's Make a Night of It' (1938), 'Sing for Your Supper' (1941), 'Mexican Spitfire Sees a Ghost' (1942) and 'The Parson and the Outlaw' (1957)
    Married Mary Pickford (1937-79)
When Paramount sent a crew to screen test college students at the University of Kansas, he was reluctant to try out because he did not want his fraternity brothers to see him in makeup.
He said about his squeaky-clean image, 'I got tired of being known as 'America's Boyfriend'... I would have loved to have played a villain.'
He became estranged from his daughter Roxanne after she married a man he did not approve of.
He was better remembered as Pickford's husband/widower than for his acting.
He was a talented trombonist and led a band that included Gene Krupa.
He served as a flight instructor with the Navy during World War II.
He noted, 'I met not one, but thousands of young men who said `You are responsible for me being a flyer. When I was a little boy, I saw you in 'Wings.'''
While entertaining troops with his band in Korea, his helicopter came under anti-aircraft fire.
He won the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for his philanthropic work (1985).
Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., quipped, 'Sometimes you wish he'd be a son of a bitch, just to break the monotony.'
