Why he might be annoying:

He whined that his middle class childhood stifled him.
He often bullied younger boys during his public school years.
When teaching in Greece, he seduced a colleague's wife who abandoned her baby daughter to be with him.
Some find his prose pretentious and hard to follow.
His best known work, 'The Collector,' about a loner who kidnaps a young woman inspired a number of similar real life cases.
He made anti-Semitic comments about his New York editor and publisher.
He was a recluse who called his fans 'leeches.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a talented athlete in his teens.
His short stint in the military made him come to hate all forms of authoritarianism.
He lost his teaching job when he tried to introduce pedagogical reforms.
His first novel 'The Collector' was so successful he was able to retire from teaching.
He experimented with traditional forms and is sometimes called the first postmodern novelist.
'The Collector' and 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' were made into well-received films.
The New York Times called him 'the thinking person's popular novelist or the light reader's serious one.'
