    (May 2, 1947- )
Born in Cromer, Norfolk, United Kingdom
Inventor of the bagless cyclonic-separation vacuum cleaner (‘Say goodbye to the bag’)
Founder of the Dyson domestic appliance company (1992)
Co-author of ‘Against the Odds: An Autobiography (1997)’
Namesake of the James Dyson Award, accorded to design engineers (‘simply, design something that solves a problem’)
Knight Bachelor in the New Year’s Honours (British honor system, 2006)
While developing his signature product, he had to rely mainly on his wife’s income as an art teacher.
It took more than 5,000 prototypes to achieve the G-Force bagless vacuum.
Because no British distributor or manufacturer wanted to get on the bad side of the cleaner-bag market, he elected to take the G-Force to Japan.
He contracted viral meningitis in his mid-40s but had no clue about it until his wife had a doctor test him.
His first invention, a high-speed flat-hulled watercraft, was a co-op effort with the son of a chocolatier (1970).
Beginning with a wheelbarrow, he used a sphere in place of the standard narrow wheels to encourage all-around motion (1974).
He was a long distance runner: ‘I was quite good at it, not because I was physically good, but because I had more determination; I learned determination from it.'
His G-Force had the last laugh at the International Design Fair in Japan (1991).
Concerned that the Design Museum cared more about style than serious design, he resigned from the board of trustees (2004).
