Offensive fullback/defensive linebacker/placekicker/punter for Army (1944-46)
Won the Heisman Trophy and the Sullivan Award for best amateur athlete (1945)
Appeared in the movie 'The Spirit of West Point' (1947)
Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame (1959)
Why he might be annoying
After getting annoyed at a hotel manager, he ripped a radiator out of the floor.
He initially attended the University of North Carolina because his mother's cousin was the football coach there.
He tried to enlist in the Navy but was rejected for being overweight and having a vision problem.
An arrangement that would have allowed him to play pro football by granting him extended leaves in exchange for a longer service commitment was scuttled by the army after the deal leaked.
Why he might not be annoying
During his years at West Point, Army had an undefeated 27-0-1 record.
After a 59-0 shellacking of Notre Dame, Irish coach Ed McKeever announced, 'I have just seen Superman. He wears number 35 and goes by the name of Blanchard.'
He was part of the honor guard at FDR's funeral.
He served as a fighter pilot in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
While serving in England, his plane caught fire. Rather than abandon the aircraft over a populated area, he brought it down safely at an airfield and was cited for bravery (1959).
